OCR (optical character recognition) is the recognition of printed or written text characters by a computer. This involves photoscanning of the text character-by-character, analysis of the scanned-in image, and then translation of the character image into character codes, such as ASCII, commonly used in data processing.
ICR (Intelligent character recognition) is the computer translation of manually entered text characters into machine-readable characters. In practice, characters are entered in a rough printed form from an I/O device, and the image of the captured data entry is then analyzed and translated into the machine-readable characters.
